Inter Faith Social Action Council

The Inter-Faith Social Action Council was started in 1971 by the United Community Church, St. Andrew Presbyterian Church and Prince of Peace Catholic Church. In later years other churches and the Jewish Congregation jointed the group. Each congregation has a representation of a maximum of six members. The Council meets every month from September to May.

The Purpose of the Council is to enhance and enrich lives on an ongoing basis while, at the same time, provide immediate relief when needed. The driving force is to increase understanding among all races, religions and cultures

thereby making our community a more caring place in which to live. In order to promote the health, welfare, and education of deserving person in Sun City Center, and it immediate environs, a means of moneymaking activities has to be carried out. A number of different moneymaking activities were carried out in years past. Now, the principal means of raising money is the "Nearly New Shop."

The Nearly New Shop was started in 1974. Located first in Wimauma, now in Sun City Center, the shop is open on Wednesday and Saturday from 8 am until noon. During the months of June, July and August the shop is open for business only on Saturday. The manager is on duty from 8 am to 4 pm on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Donations are accepted at any time. There is a pick-up service for large items. Its is operated entirely by a group of devoted volunteers with one paid manager. All merchandise is donated. The people of Sun City Center have been very generous in this effort.

A Grants Committee very thoroughly reviews all requests for money. A very large number of these requests are awarded. Every year many scholarships re awarded to deserving seniors at East Bay High School, Lennard High School and the South County Career Center. Successful college may apply for continuing scholarships throughout their educational career.

With the continued generosity of donors, here in Sun City Center, the support of the many people who shop weekly, and the hard work done by the dedicated volunteers, the Inter-Faith Council will continue to fulfill this very worth while endeavor.
